A Student’s Corner: Your Success Starts at Sun Rise

Research emphasizes the crucial impact the first hour of your day has on overall productivity and mindset. This initial hour is a powerful predictor of how the rest of your day unfolds, influencing your focus, accomplishments, and reaction to challenges. Understanding and optimizing this time is a common trait among successful individuals, from entrepreneurs to business leaders, who use it to gear up for a result-oriented day, steering clear of mere reactivity.

My Morning Routine:

  • 5:00 AM: Wake up with the uplifting tune of “Yet” by Chandler Moore and Ashley Hess.

  • 5:15 AM: Reflect and write in my gratitude journal, focusing on my current feelings and what I’m thankful for.

  • 5:30 AM: Engage in spiritual and mental preparation through prayer, reading daily devotions, and meditating, including a quiet time of 10 minutes.

  • 6:00 AM: Plan my day by reviewing schedules and prepping for upcoming meetings.

Five Reflective Questions:

  • What does today look like?

  • What do I aim to achieve?

  • Where will I find success today?

  • What fears do I have?

  • How will I overcome these fears?

By concentrating on productivity, positivity, and purpose alignment from the start, I set a solid foundation for a day of high performance, happiness, and minimal stress.

Being Productive:

"Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort." – Paul J. Meyer

This quote sums up my approach to ensuring each day is not only productive but also filled with a sense of accomplishment and alignment with my goals. By dedicating the first hour of my day to setting intentions, I'm able to maintain focus, drive, and clarity, ultimately leading to a more fulfilled and successful life.

The distinction between being busy and being productive lies in the intention behind our actions. While many are engulfed in tasks, deadlines, and assignments, only a few have mastered the art of productivity with a focus on achieving tangible results. Productivity is an art that requires deliberate practice and a commitment to executing tasks flawlessly, regardless of the situation. Unlike merely staying busy with insignificant tasks, productive individuals prioritize their activities to maximize results, using their time efficiently. This prioritization, especially during the first hour of the day, lays the groundwork for sustained productivity.

Key Questions for Enhanced Productivity:

  • What do I aim to accomplish today?

  • What are my specific goals?

  • What distractions do I need to eliminate?

The Power of Positivity:

A few positive thoughts during the week can change your month...and can change your life.” Each morning, before the day's responsibilities begin, I engage in positive self-affirmation. Looking in the mirror, I affirm my belief in myself with three positive statements. This practice is foundational because belief in oneself must precede others' belief in you.

Positive thinking isn't just an attitude; it's a strategy. The nature of your thoughts—positive or negative—shapes your perspective on life and influences your outcomes. Starting your day with positive affirmations allows you to internalize empowering beliefs, aligning you with your core values and setting a positive tone for the day ahead. This method of starting with positivity not only primes you for success but also ensures that your productivity is purposeful and aligned with your broader life goals.

SAY This DAILY!

I AM WORTHY!

I AM BEAUTIFUL!

I AM COURAGEOUS!

I AM EXCITED ABOUT TODAY!

Today is GOING TO BE A GREAT DAY!

I AM ONE STEP CLOSER!

I AM BLESSED

Purpose: Living Beyond Existence

"The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose," Richard Leider insightfully remarks. It's a reminder not to lose ourselves in the pursuit of professional success at the expense of our true calling. As my parents wisely advised, the essence of life isn't solely found in happiness or personal fulfillment but in being valuable, useful, and compassionate, making a tangible difference in the lives of others. Each day, I dedicate time to reflect on my purpose, pondering how I can be of service and contribute positively to someone's day. This reflection comes from the heart, the most reliable guide to uncovering one's passion and purpose, encouraging us to live a life that transcends mere existence and embraces meaningful engagement.

Questions for Daily Reflection:

  • How can I make a difference today?

  • Who can I help today?

  • In what ways can I be useful?

Three Steps to Walking in Purpose:

Benjamin Franklin once said, "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing about." This sentiment resonates with me deeply as it embodies the desire to leave a lasting impact through meaningful actions or words. Recently, a conversation with a friend about her aspirations to empower millions of women through her talk show highlighted the power of passion in fueling one's purpose. Her energy and dedication were palpable, reminding me that while many of us dream of making an impact, actualizing these dreams requires a concrete plan.

Step One: WRITE IT DOWN!

Jack London said, “Keep a notebook and travel with it, eat with it, and write down your every thought in it.” The act of writing serves not just as a memory aid but as a powerful tool to bring your dreams into focus. This method, which I once saw as a tedious punishment in grade school, is actually a crucial step in prioritizing and actively pursuing your dreams. David Shands, author of Dreams Are Built Overnight, emphasized to me the unreliability of memory and the importance of documenting every idea. Writing down your dreams is the first decisive step toward alleviating doubts and charting a course toward your goals.

Step Two: RESEARCH! RESEARCH! RESEARCH!

David Sarnoff describes research as "The distance between an idea and its realization." Transitioning from merely dreaming to strategizing for success involves in-depth research. This process is about exploring well-trodden paths to unearth new ways of thinking, driven by an insatiable curiosity. Research fuels your journey, transforming curiosity into the cornerstone of your legacy. It encourages you to question continuously and delve deep into the mechanics of your aspirations.

Step Three: GO GET A MENTOR!

Lailah Gifty Akita once stated, “Every great achiever is inspired by a great mentor.” Reflecting on my journey, mentorship has been instrumental alongside my efforts. Mentors have the unique ability to see potential in you that you might not see in yourself. They offer new perspectives, opportunities, and wisdom that prepare you not just academically, but for life's broader challenges. A good mentor supports you, guides you through difficulties, and helps transform failures into stepping stones for success, steering you back on track toward fulfilling your destiny.

These steps—writing down your dreams, committing to thorough research, and seeking mentorship—form a robust foundation for anyone aspiring to turn their dreams into reality. Each step is a crucial progression in the journey from conception to achievement, paving the way for a life of purpose and accomplishment.
